Live at Crab Shanty tonight!!

Under new management, Crab Shanty is making strides to establish their neighborhood seafood restaurant as a live music hotspot. It has been a great family-friendly gig for me for a few years, and I’m thrilled to see it grow.

They have started having music on Friday evenings, and last night I had the pleasure of catching a solo acoustic performance by Cris Jacobs (of the band The Bridge). His soulful twang and unrelenting skill were a pleasure and an inspiration. I’m excited to follow his act tonight.

Ticket give-away winners

Congrats to our first ever ticket give-away winners Becky Edwards and Liz Casale for tonight’s show at the 8×10!  I printed up slips of paper for each attendee of the Facebook event for this show and literally picked their names out of my hat this morning.  Congrats and thanks for the support, ladies!

I’ll try to brainstorm some more fun promotional and fan-appreciation type things for future gigs.  Suggestions welcome…

Hope to see a bunch of your smiling faces tonight!  Keep on Rocking!

4/2 gig recap

Saturday’s Crab Shanty gig was great. Special thanks to everyone who came out!

I mixed things up by performing all new cover songs*, which was a great challenge for me to keep the gig exciting and maintain my focus and intensity (which is sometimes tough for a 3-hour solo gig). I carefully planned out three 50 minute sets (with breaks to catch highlights of the Final 4) with a blend of originals and first-time covers, including:

Billy Joel’s “Just the way you are” and “Still Rock and Roll to me” (with Greg on guest vocals), Marvin Gaye’s “What’s going on”, The Beatles’ “Eleanor Rigby”, “Can’t buy my love”, and “Hey Jude”, Jim Croce’s “Bad bad Leroy Brown”, Madonna’s “Like a Virgin”, Queen’s “Another one bites the dust”, Clapton’s “Change the World”, Glen Hansard’s “Falling Slowly” (with Ashley on guest vocals), and, the first set closer and personal highlight, Louis Armstrong’s “What a wonderful World”.

It was an exhausting but satisfying gig – I’ll keep trying to put on interesting shows as long as I have an audience – thanks for supporting Local Live Music.

Cheers,

G

*Disclaimer (lest you give me undue credit): I do “cheat” with lyric / chord sheets so its not like I memorized a dozen new cover songs, which would be a feat… I joked early in the show that “Tonight is not so much a test of musical skill as it is a test of my eyesight”.

Shanty gig highlights

Thanks for a wonderful solo Crab Shanty gig this past Saturday. As an experiment I played my electric for the gig and though it took a little getting used to finger-picking it, it was pretty cool and provided a unique vibe for the show.

Thanks to the friends and family that came out, including an ol’ buddy who now lives in Nashville and his folks – neat historical tidbit – I performed at their wedding reception 7 years ago this week. Happy Anniversary Den and Rita!

Playing to a familiar and receptive crowd allowed me to play mostly original tunes with just a few fun covers splashed in, which is always a treat.

Highlights included:

Gig-testing a bunch of new material – “Momma’s Touch”, “Sunny A.M”, “More of Less”, “Vacancy Signs”, “Tea with Einstein”, and “Miner’s Lament”,

Playing songs I’ve released on CD – “Get You”, “Mountain Trail” (for Kim!), “Brainchild”, “Jebediah”, “Mindy” (for Joe!), “New Umbrella”, “Bohemian” (for Juan!), “Day to Day”, “Drop these Blues” (For Jonny!), and the rarities “Hill House” and “Prisoner’s Escape”,

Dusting off my old band Old King Cole’s songs “Greener” and “Through my Blood” (For McMullin, who sound-engineered for OKC ten years ago!),

And having some fun with a blue-grass “Come Together” (The Beatles) and a rockin’ “Character Zero” (Phish)…

I wrapped up 2 long sets with my raucous “Irish Drinking Song” and my rarely performed Celtic-inspired guitar composition in honor of St. Patrick’s Day.

Slainte!

Here’s a new video of the band performing our newest song – lyrics are up at the A Video page – enjoy!
